Unemployment falls, inflation rises

Wiesbaden (dpa) – The inflation rate in Germany rose in March to its highest level since reunification. Consumer prices were 7.3 percent up on the same month last year, according to the Federal Statistical Office. This was mainly due to energy prices, which soared by 39.5 percent compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate in Germany fell by 0.2 points month-on-month to 5.1 percent. “The labour market continues to recover,” Daniel Terzenbach, a board member at the Federal Employment Agency, said in Nuremberg on Thursday. Unemployment is falling and employment is rising due to the easing of the coronavirus policy and the beginning of the spring recovery, he said.
